Student internships available with NCPIRG

The North Carolina Public Interest Research Group (NCPIRG) is now accepting applications for its internship and training program based on campus.

“We are looking for a few students passionate about making positive change,” said Dan DeRosa, Millennials Project Advocate for NCPIRG. “Saint Augustine students can run campaigns ranging from protecting our environment to combating hunger and homelessness to making textbooks more affordable. They’ll learn how to recruit a team, plan an event, and build grassroots support for important issues.”

NCPIRG describes itself as “a consumer group that stands up to powerful interests whenever they threaten our health and safety, our financial security or our right to fully participate in our democratic society.”

”The organization’s spring 2015 campaigns are:

*Go Solar, North Carolina! – We’re working to get 20% of our power form solar by 2030.
*Make Textbooks Affordable – Students spend on average $1200 a semester on textbooks. That’s crazy and we can change that!
*Protect Our Coasts from Drilling
*Corporate Money out of Elections
*Don’t Frack North Carolina

Interns take on a leadership role within a campaign, and in many cases are able to receive course credit for their work, DeRosa stated. Graduating seniors can also apply to join NCPIRG’s full-time staff as a campus organizer – a two-year program inn which participants run campaigns on issues facing our country and train student leaders in activism organizing and advocacy.
