Falcons even record as season goes into full swing

After a convincing win against crosstown rival William Peace University in a road test on Dec. 5, the Falcons are looking forward to a strong season. Saint Augustine’s University shot 60 percent in upending Peace 90-70 in a men’s basketball game at the Hermann Athletic Center in Raleigh.

The win evened the Falcons’ record at 4-4.

Nick Tennell, a senior from Port St. Lucie, FL, poured in a career-high 16 points in the win. “We are coming together as a family and everybody is on the same page,” Tennell said. “Our ultimate goal is to win the CIAA Championship and playing in the national tournament.”

Winning it all is possible, Tennel said, if the team “can continue to work hard every day on and off the court. We will continue to believe in ourselves even if no one else does.

The win at Peace, while it showed the Falcons’ potential, was a nonconference game and ultimately a nonfactor as far as the tam’s season prospects go.

“Conference games are extremely important because they count against our standings and determines our seeding in the CIAA tournament,” Tennell pointed out.

But the win was a step in the right direction for the Falcons. Since the Falcons 2-1 start, they lost three out of four games to opponents Chowan University, Lenor-Rhyne University and Alderson Broaddus University. Their one win in this span was against Lander University, who they beat in a 60-57 nail-bitter at the Lander Classic.

Their next test for the men’s basketball team comes Dec. 1l when they face Morris College at home.

Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons are coming off a win after a slow start to the season. The Lady Falcons defeated Bluefield State College 61-45 in an away game on Dec. 3. The win brought their record to 2-6. Their next game is a home game Dec. 11 against Morris College.
