Softball team drops season opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) drove in two runs and Haili Pettifer (Soph./Langley, British Columbia) knocked in a run for Saint Augustine’s University, which lost 8-3 to St. Andrews University in its softball season opener at Worthdale Park on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016.

 The second game was stopped in the second inning due to rain. It will resume at St. Andrews on April 20. The Lady Falcons trailed 4-3 before the game was halted.
 
In the first game, Hill smacked a deep fly ball to the left field fence for a two-run double. Her hit pulled the Lady Falcons within 6-3 in the fifth inning. St. Andrews added a run in the sixth and seventh innings for the final score.
 
Pettifer recorded an RBI single in the second inning to tie the contest at 1-1, but St. Andrews scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning to open a 6-1 lead.
 
Three Lady Falcons had two hits apiece in the contest. Jasmine Rios (So./Greensboro, NC) went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored and Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) went 2-for-3 with a triple and one run scored. Tyanna Petersen (Jr./Brooklyn Park, MN) went 2-for-3 with one run scored. The Lady Falcons collected nine hits as a team.
 
Meranda Zanni (Jr./Phoenix, OR) was the losing pitcher despite striking out five batters and walking two. Hawley III pitched seven complete innings to get the win for St. Andrews, which tallied nine hits. Kori Ballard went 3-for-3 with a home run, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored for St. Andrews.
 
The Lady Falcons hit the road Saturday, Feb. 6, for a doubleheader against North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C. The first game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the second contest at 3 p.m.
