Talk about finishing with a bang — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary made an unexpected campaign stop at Saint Augustine’s University on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the tail end of SAU’s week-long Homecoming celebration.

Thousands of people from Saint Augustine’s and the community came to the event, which was not announced on campus until Saturday.

Secretary Clinton urged the crowd to vote early and asked them to support Democratic candidates for local and statewide offices. She gave her stump speech with standards promises such as focusing on the middle class and working for all people, but also tailored her speech a bit for a Falcon audience. The nominee acknowledged Dr. Ward, congratulated the university on its upcoming 150th anniversary and gave a shout out to the Superior Sound Marching Band, which performed before she took the stage. The Blue Chips also performed.

Several other candidates also spoke, and the former secretary was accompanied by the “mothers of the movement,” mothers who have lost their sons to violence — Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin; Lucia McBath, the mother of Jordan Davis; Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner; Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of Sandra Bland and Maria Hamilton, the mother of Dontre Hamilton.
