Love and Football

For many people football is a sport of entertainment and competition. For one Saint Augustine’s student, Roy Garris Jr, football has become a part of his daily life. Roy (sophomore) who plays on the Saint Augustine’s football team had a head start playing the game starting his journey as early as the third grade. In 2015 spring semester Roy became a fellow falcon joining the St. Aug college football team.

When playing sports there’s  always obstacles one must face and learn to overcome.

“The hardest challenge while playing for Saint Augustine’s would be the lack of respect the players get and playing both offense and defense; learning the offense playbook and trying to learn the coverage for defense”.

Along with those obstacles, the biggest most obvious challenge for the players besides learning the playbooks is learning to balance out their daily schedules accordingly for classes. “I do my school work during the day in between my classes, practice at 3:30 p.m, football meetings at 7:15-8:30 p.m and then work on my homework after”.

On Saturday November 4th, Saint Augustine’s football team played their final game against its rival school Shaw University, winning the game 31-14. “I felt great about the last game; the only thing I wish I could have changed about it was catching the interception that I dropped”. All in all, Roy plans to continue his football journey at Saint Aug next semester, and even after college football will always have a special place in his heart.
