Falcons’ baseball team wins season opener

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 2) – Marquis Johnson (Sr./Richmond, VA), Jayvon Green-Springfield (Fr./Chester, PA) and Amilcar Yanez (Jr./Valencia, Venezuela) combined on a four-hitter as Saint Augustine’s University shut out the University of Virginia-Wise 3-0 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Friday. The Falcons won their first season opener since 2013.

Johnson earned the win as the starter after firing a one-hitter in five innings. He totaled seven strikeouts and two walks.

Green-Springfield relieved Johnson and allowed no runs in three innings. Yanez recorded two strikeouts and a groundout in the ninth inning for the save.

The Falcons collected 10 hits in the win. Cody Harris (Jr./) led the way with one run and one RBI on 2-for-3 hitting. Nine Falcons tallied at least one hit in the contest.

The Falcons scored their first run in the third inning on an infield error that scored Derrick Rabb, Jr. (Fr./Charlotte, NC). Harris reached home from third base on a double steal in the fourth inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that scored Kilvio Garcia (Jr./Bronx, NY).

Both teams meet up again in a doubleheader Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3:30 p.m.
