SAU Golf fifth in CIAA tourney; Cudjoe, Duncan earn all-CIAA honors

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 19) – Sam Cudjoe (So./Bethel, Trinidad & Tobago) and Tanner Duncan (Jr./Clayton, NC) of Saint Augustine’s University were named to the All-CIAA Men’s Golf Team on Friday at the conference championship tournament in New Kent, Va. The site was The Club at Viniterra golf course.

The All-Conference team consisted of golfers with the 10 lowest averages in the regular season. The averages were based on results from the CIAA Northern Division, CIAA Southern Division and CIAA Championship Tournaments.

Cudjoe earned All-CIAA honors for the second consecutive year. Duncan is an All-CIAA golfer for the first time.

The Falcons finished fifth in the championship tournament with a two-day team score of 657. They started the second round in sixth place after shooting a 335 on Thursday, but bounced back Friday with a 322, which was the third-lowest score of the day. The deficit was too much too overcome, however.

Virginia Union University shot 607 to win the conference title and Fayetteville State University shot 622 to place second. Livingstone College shot 633 to finish third followed by Chowan University (656), Saint Augustine’s, Johnson C. Smith (667), Virginia State University (682) and Elizabeth City State University (803).

Individually, Duncan of SAU fired a two-day score of 153, including a 74 on Friday, to tie for sixth. Falcons’ teammate James Thomas Moore (Jr./Augusta, GA) shot 156 to tie for ninth.

Sean Burke of Fayetteville State was the individual medalist with a 147 score. He beat DeJuan Powell of Johnson C. Smith in a one-hole playoff.

The Falcons play again in the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, formerly the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, on May 9-12 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
