October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Saint Augustine’s University has hosted several events around campus under the theme “SAU Goes Pink.” Sponsored by #SafeFalcons, the peer health educator program, and the university’s Department of Public Health & Exercise Science, the events aimed to create awareness and educate the SAU community on breast cancer.
The campaign will conclude during Homecoming week with a full day of activities on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Quad. Classes will be suspended from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students to attend the events.
#SafeFalcons will host the first SAU Health Pink Fair, where health agencies will be on campus to bring awareness to college students about their health and ways to start early prevention. Some of the health agencies attending the fair are Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Society, and Tickled Pink Breast Cancer Support.
April McCoy, #SafeFalcons’ advisor and assistant professor of the Public Health and Exercise Science Department, is excited for the upcoming events. “Agencies are looking for volunteers as well as possible internships offers for SAU students,” Dr. McCoy said.
Following the fair, a Greek Stroll Off for Cancer will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the Quad. All Greek fraternities and sororities will demonstrate their stepping skills with a three-to-five-minute routine. #SafeFalcons members will be the judges and a winner will be announced.
The stroll off will be followed by the grand Pink Day Party, from 3 p.m-6 p.m. on the Quad, where music, giveaways, and games will take place. Also, the famous, big pink chair from the American Cancer Society will be on campus. Students and staff will be able to hop on the chair and take pictures with friends and colleagues.
