SAU Cancels Spring Athletic Season

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 18) – In conjunction with decisions made by the NCAA and CIAA, Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) will cancel the 2020 spring athletic season due to the outbreak of COVID-19, effective immediately.

The NCAA canceled its winter and spring sports championships and the CIAA suspended spring athletic competition because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Saint Augustine’s University supports the decision of the NCAA and CIAA,” SAU Interim President Dr. Maria Lumpkin said. “This is in the best interest of our student-athletes. Their well-being is most important.”

In addition to canceling athletic events, SAU will suspend all athletic related activities including recruiting and formal and organized practices.

“This is the right thing to do,” SAU Athletic Director George Williams said. “I really feel for our student-athletes but their safety and health come first, in addition to our coaches and administrative staff. A healthy person is always better than a sick person.”

Saint Augustine’s University will continue to monitor the spread of COVID-19 in an effort to keep the campus safe.
