Falcons lose to Johnson C. Smith

Tyron Laughinghouse (So./Greenville, N.C.) grabbed eight passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns for Saint Augustine’s University, but the Falcons lost 27-21 to Johnson C. Smith University in a CIAA football game at Irwin Belk Complex on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012.

Laughinghouse leads the CIAA with 11 touchdown receptions and 90 points. Overall, he is the CIAA leader with 15 touchdowns this season including three on kickoff returns and one on a punt return.

The loss was the second in three games for the Falcons, who dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the CIAA. The Golden Bulls, winners of three consecutive games, upped their record to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the league. The win pushed the Golden Bulls past the Falcons and Shaw into second place in the Southern Division. All three teams started the day tied for second at 3-2.

Teddy Bacote (R-Jr./Hampton, Va.) completed 25 of 45 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns, both to Laughinghouse. He also threw an interception for the Falcons, who gained 332 yards on offense. Defensively, Chaz Robinson< (Jr./Hampton, Va.) led the defense with a game-high 10 tackles and Joe Reed (Sr./Anderson, S.C.) added six tackles and two sacks. Alexander Tucker (Jr./Union, S.C.) had his best day this season as a punter, averaging 44.2 yards on four punts.

Bacote found Laughinghouse for a 16-yard touchdown pass to put the Falcons ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. It was the Falcons’ only lead for the entire game. Keahn Wallace connected with Matthew Jeffries for three touchdowns to give the Golden Bulls a 20-7 lead by the early moments of the third quarter.

Phillip English (So./Albany,  Ga.) of the Falcons scored on a five-yard run to trim the margin to 20-14, but Dedrick Anderson scored on a 52-yard screen pass to push the Golden Bulls’ lead to 27-14 in the third quarter. Laughinghouse scored on a 14-yard pass late in the fourth quarter, but the Golden Bulls recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock for the win on their homecoming day.

For the Golden Bulls, Wallace completed 16 of 27 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns, and Jeffries caught eight passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Bulls, who gained 392 offensive yards. Chris Sams and Anthony Allen both had seven tackles on defense.

The Falcons conclude the regular season with a showdown against crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the Saint Augustine’s University Stadium in the George Williams Athletic Complex. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

The contest will be held on Senior Day. Nine seniors will be honored including (Hampton, Va.), Franklin James (Hampton, Va.), Jermaine Browne (St. Croix, US VI), (Gastonia, N.C.), Deonte Toliver(Gaithersburg, Md.), Rory Nixon (Hampton, Va.), Rowdy Batchelor (Jacksonville, N.C.), Reed and Laughinghouseton, Va.).
