SAU muscles past rival Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore center Jonathan Crawley (Richmond, Va.) continued his stellar play with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as Saint Augustine’s University dominated on both ends of the floor in upending crosstown rival Shaw University 75-63 in a CIAA men’s basketball contest inside crowded Spaulding Gymnasium on Shaw’s campus Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

The victory was the fourth consecutive win for the Falcons (14-6 overall, 7-3 CIAA), who remained unbeaten in the CIAA Southern Division with a 3-0 mark. The Falcons entered the game tied for first place in the division standings.

Another streak remained intact for the Falcons. Teams coached by St. Aug Head Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. is 5-0 against Shaw, a mark which spans over his first tenure with the Falcons from 2008-2010.

Crawley, listed at 6-8 and 340 pounds on the roster, led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding for the second consecutive game. His 16 points are a career-high and his eight rebounds tied a career-high. Senior guard Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 14 points and six rebounds, and redshirt junior forward Chris Johnson finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons were brilliant on offense and defense. The shot a season high 61.9 percent including 72.2 percent in the second half. Defensively, the Falcons limited the Bears to 30.2 percent shooting including 20.7 percent shooting in the first half to take a 40-27 halftime. The Falcons maintained their lead in the second half despite a late frenetic run by the Bears (12-7 overall, 6-3 CIAA), who fell to 0-3 in the division.

For Shaw, Andre Paulk led the Bears with 14 points and eight rebounds. Karron Johnson and Curtis Hines both added 10 points.
