RALEIGH, N.C. – Led by Cianna Fisher (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) and Minyan Murphy (Jr./San Bernardino, Calif.), Saint Augustine’s University defeated Fayetteville State University by identical 4-3 scores in a CIAA women’s tennis doubleheader at Lions Park on Monday, April 1, 2013.
Fisher won two singles matches and two doubles matches, and Murphy won two singles matches and one doubles match for the Lady Falcons, who improved to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Division. The Lady Falcons are fourth in the division over the Lady Broncos (1-14 overall, 1-5 Southern Division). The top four teams in the Southern Division qualify for the CIAA Championships, which will be held April 18-20 at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.
“We were focused and determined today,” said Murphy, the Lady Falcons’ top-seeded player. “Hopefully, we can continue to play well so we can reach the CIAA Championships.”
In the first match, Murphy defeated Samantha Ledbetter 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. Fisher beat Joylene Thompson 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 singles and Romana Charlery (Fr./Kings Hill, Virgin Islands) beat Laura Worriax 6-2, 6-4 in No. 5 singles. Fisher and Kenishea Donaldson (Jr./Trenton, N.J.) beat Worriax and Thompson 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.
In the second match, Murphy topped Ledbetter 8-4 in No. 1 singles and Fisher downed Thompson 8-0 in No. 4 singles. Murphy and Tiana Morris(Sr./Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Ledbetter and Brittany Williams 8-5 in No. 1 doubles, and Donaldson and Fisher beat Taylor Norris and Worriax 8-2 in No. 2 doubles.
