Volleyball team tests Winston-Salem

rp_primary_2013_Volleyball_Team_Photo11Skyla Isidore (Jr./Morne Castries, St. Lucia) paced Saint Augustine’s University with 14 kills and Victoria Davis (Sr./San Diego, Calif.) added 12 kills, nine digs and three blocking assists, but the Lady Falcons lost a tough five-set CIAA volleyball match to division leader Winston-Salem State University at the Gaines Center on Monday, October 21, 2013.

Julieesa Thomas (Soph./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) added 19 assists and Kayla Cason totaled 24 digs for the Lady Falcons, who are 4-3 in the Southern Division, 7-6 in the CIAA and 7-11 overall. Meghan Mahon (Fr./Houston, Texas) had 11 assists while Temperance Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) and Brooke Morris (Fr./Norwalk, Conn.) each had four blocking assists. The defeat dropped the Lady Falcons into a third-place tie with Johnson C. Smith University, but the Lady Falcons hold the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the two-match season series against the Lady Golden Bulls.

 

The Lady Falcons started slowly against the Lady Rams, losing the first set 25-9. They bounced back in the second set, jumping out to an 11-2 lead on the second consecutive service ace by Thomas before holding on for a 25-22 win.

The Lady Falcons fell behind in the third set, which they eventually lost 25-16. They were down 16-12 in the fourth set but came back to win 25-22. In the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Falcons led 11-10, but the Lady Rams scored the final five points for the 15-11 win. Despite the loss, the Lady Falcons showed marked improvement from the first time both teams met, a 3-0 Lady Rams victory on September 23, 2013.

Olivia Owens finished with 17 kills while Katelin Wensley and Avoni Seymour added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Lady Rams, who remained in first place by one game in the Southern Division. Their record is 6-1 in the division, 11-2 in the CIAA and 12-10 overall. Kayla Brass had 42 assists and Katelyn Sigala collected 16 digs while Darissa Jones finished with seven blocks.

The Lady Falcons host Shaw University at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, October 21, 2013. Match time is 3 p.m. The Lady Falcons won the first meeting 3-0 on October 10, 2013.
