Saint Augustine’s University Interim President Everett B. Ward (right) and Chief Operating Officer Steven E. Hairston lead a “march to the polls” Tuesday morning. After speeches by Henry Capers Jr., the president of the NAACP chapter of Saint Augustine’s University, and from Michael Thomas, the university’s Student Government Association president, more than 100 marchers accompanied the president to the Tarboro Road Community Center, 121 N. Tarboro Street, to vote.
Marching to the poll has been a tradition at the great Saint Augustine’s University for many years. It is a tradition designed to allow students to take their place in history and let their voices be heard. Many classes were cancelled so faculty and staff could take part in the event.
