Head Coach George Williams of Saint Augustine’s University was honored with another national award on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, when the legendary figure was named NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Men’s National Head Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
“I appreciate my peers for voting for me, but one thing about the coach of the year award – it doesn’t belong to one person,” said Williams, who leads the NCAA with the most track & field championships for a coach, regardless of division. “It belongs to the program. My assistant coaches and I will enjoy this award.”
Williams won his third straight USTFCCCA national outdoor coaching award and his fourth in six seasons. Overall, he has captured 18 USTFCCCA national indoor and outdoor coaching accolades since 1994. The Falcons’ coach has been the recipient of more than 150 conference, regional and national awards over an illustrious 39-year coaching career at Saint Augustine’s University.
The iconic coach earned his latest honor after leading the Falcons to their third straight NCAA Division II outdoor track & field title in Allendale, Mich., on May 23. The Falcons outscored the University of Findlay 53-50 to claim their 13th NCAA outdoor men’s title and 36th NCAA championship overall in the program.
Two of his scholar-athletes won individual national titles at the outdoor championships. Atlantic Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year Omar Johnson (Jr./St. Ann, Jamaica) was the 400-meter winner and David Shaw, Jr. (Sr./Red Springs, NC) was the triple jump winner. Burkheart Ellis, Jr. (Jr./Raleigh, NC), a three-time All-American at the championship meet, placed third in the 200-meter dash to win the men’s title for the Falcons, who are the 18-time CIAA men’s indoor and outdoor champions.
