Dr. Everett B. Ward has officially become the 11th president of Saint Augustine’s University with the conclusion of his investiture on Friday, Oct. 30. The event was held at Wake Chapel — a church large enough to hold over 1,000 people – and attendees included faculty, staff and students, delegates of areas colleges and universities, delegates of the Episcopal Church, the SAU Board of Trustees, and the family of Dr. Ward.
The service began with University Chaplain Mother Nita Byrd leading a procession of guests preceding Dr. Ward into the church. The program included musical selections from the University Choir, University Chamber Winds, a performance from the Reader’s Theatre Troupe and greetings from platform guests such as Congressman David E. Price (D-Chapel Hill); Rev. Canon James G. Callaway, General Secretary, Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion, Episcopal Church; and Henry Capers Jr., president of the Student Government Association at Saint Augustine’s University.
The Right Reverend Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and University Trustee, was present to commence Dr. Ward’s swearing in by stating the purpose then leading the presentation of the Symbols of Authority. Soon after, the newly sworn in President Dr. Ward delivered an inspirational inaugural address.
The singing of the Alma Mater, the retiring of colors, and the ringing of the University Bell concluded the service and begin a new chapter of Saint Augustine’s University history.
