Lady Falcons top Virginia Union in volleyball

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Olivia Porter (Sr./Bakersfield, CA) totaled 19 kills as Saint Augustine’s University defeated Virginia Union University 3-2 for its third straight win in two days at the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up II on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015.

The victory capped a successful weekend for the Lady Falcons, who defeated Bowie State University 3-0 and Lincoln (Pa.) University 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Lady Falcons evened their overall record at 11-11 and improved to 7-6 in the CIAA with three regular-season matches remaining.
Brittany Jamison (Fr./Summerville, SC) and Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) added 11 kills and eight kills, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who won 18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 17-25, 15-12. Jamison and McPhaul combined for eight blocks and Porter added three blocks.
Juliseea Thomas (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) tallied a season-high 40 assists in addition to 17 digs, and Jamison had 14 digs. Zoey Isom (Fr./Phoenix, AZ) finished with 24 digs for the Lady Falcons, who scored the final four points to overcome a 12-11 deficit in the fifth set.
The Lady Falcons scored the last three points with Meghan Mahon (Jr./Houston, TX) serving. She recorded a service ace and Virginia Union committed two errors to give the Lady Falcons the victory. The Lady Falcons had less kills (51-60) but also had fewer service errors (6-12) and return errors (3-6) in the match.
The third set was similar to the fifth set. The Lady Falcons trailed by one, 24-23, but scored three consecutive points to pull out the set. Virginia Union committed two attack errors and Dionna Hopkins (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) ended the set with a kill off a Thomas assist for the 26-24 win.
Arianna Bethel registered 15 kills and 22 digs while Fernanda Faustino and Ambryanna Moore added 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively, for the Lady Panthers (9-12 overall, 7-6 CIAA).  Esha Atkins amassed 50 assists and Faustino had 19 digs while Natalia Gascot contributed 17 digs. Brittney Dobbins collected four blocks.
The Lady Falcons began the Round-Up on Saturday with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-17 win over Bowie State. Porter paced the Lady Falcons with 13 kills and Thomas added 16 assists. Isom chipped in 17 digs and Elisa Ray (So./Nashville, TN) had four service aces.
Bowie State was sparked by Yaje Ngundam with eight kills, four blocks and 10 digs. Adrielle Brisbon had 14 assists and Marissa Martinez recorded 16 digs.
The Lady Falcons carried the momentum from the Bowie State victory into the Lincoln (Pa.) match. Porter led the Lady Falcons with 13 kills and four service aces while Jamison and Shakera Hall (Fr./Bridgetown, Barbados) each accumulated 10 kills in the 25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 win. Thomas finished with 27 assists and 12 digs while Isom had 21 digs. Jamison recorded 11 digs and Mahon had 12 assists.
For Lincoln (Pa.), Jillian Lee finished with 10 kills and four blocks, and Shanna King added 21 assists. Sydney Cook totaled 19 digs.
The Lady Falcons will visit Fayetteville State University in a CIAA Southern Division match on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C. Match time is 3 p.m.
