LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Jeremy Saunders (Jr./Hampton, VA) scored a career-high 19 points for Saint Augustine’s University in a 68-47 CIAA men’s basketball loss to Lincoln (Pa.) University at Rivero Hall on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016.
Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, who never recovered after a late first half run by the Lions. The score was tied 15-15 with 6:46 left in the first half, but the Lions scored the final 15 points for a 30-15 halftime lead.
The Lions (5-10 overall, 3-2 CIAA) scored the first four points in the second half for a 19-0 run which covered both halves. Their lead reached 24 points with 8:42 left in the contest.
The Falcons, one of the CIAA’s top rebounding teams, scored a chunk of their 47 points on follow shots. Their 16-6 dominance on the offensive glass led to a 15-7 edge in second chance points. January and Devin Derry (Fr./Acworth, GA) hauled in five and three offensive rebounds, respectively, to lead the Falcons.
The rebounds were not enough, however, to offset the shooting of the Lions, who made 53.5 percent of their shots including 56.3 percent behind the three-point arc. The Falcons shot 27.8 percent from the field including 17.1 percent from three-point land.
Jordan Watson scored 15 points and Antonio Depina added 13 points for the Lions. Sean James chipped in 11.
The Falcons (5-9 overall, 0-4 CIAA) will complete their three-game road trip against CIAA Northern Division teams on Monday, Jan. 11, when they visit Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va., at 7:30 p.m. The Virginia Union contest will be the third game in five days for the Falcons.
