Virginia Union overtakes men’s basketball team in second half

RICHMOND, Va. – Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) scored 13 points and Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) added 11 points for Saint Augustine’s University, but the Falcons fell 77-63 to Virginia Union University after leading at halftime of their CIAA men’s basketball contest at Barco-Stevens Hall on Monday, Jan. 11, 2016.

Marquis Hines (Sr./Fayetteville, N.C.) contributed 10 points for the Falcons, who were much more competitive than their previous meeting last week against the Panthers. On Jan. 4, the Falcons suffered an 85-53 loss in a non-conference game in Raleigh, N.C.
On Monday, the Falcons, behind 11 points from Gaskins, built a 32-27 halftime lead on 47.8 percent shooting. His three-pointer with 56 seconds left in the first half pushed the Falcons’ lead to 32-24, but Ray Anderson of the Panthers converted a three-point play right before the horn sounded for the five-point margin.
That was the beginning of an 11-0 run which carried over in the second half and put Panthers ahead 35-32. Hines scored to close the Falcons within one, but the Panthers scored seven more unanswered points for a 42-34 lead.
The Falcons (5-10 overall, 0-5 CIAA) got within 58-52 on a three-pointer by Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, Va.), who was playing in his hometown, but the Panthers closed out with a 19-11 run for the final margin.
The Falcons cooled off in the second half, shooting 29.6 percent as they were outscored 50-31 in the second half. The Panthers (7-9 overall, 1-4 CIAA) made 66.7 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes.
Crawford chipped in seven points and six rebounds for the Falcons, who shot 38 percent overall. January added seven rebounds and Gaskins handed out five assists and recorded two steals. The Falcons, one of the CIAA’s top offensive rebounding teams, had more offensive boards (12-11) than the Panthers. They also made more three-pointers (5-1).
Ray Anderson scored 27 points for the Panthers, who shot 51 percent for the contest. Colton Lewis added 13 points and 17 rebounds.
After three games in five days, the Falcons return home to host Chowan University at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday, Jan. 14. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
