On April 14, 2016 Seby Jones Auditorium was packed to capacity. A buzz generated from the crowd as they talked, with delight and laughter, about who would be the next Miss Saint Augustine’s University.
The Miss SAU Pageant continues to be one of the most anticipated and well-attended events on campus. The candidates in 2016 were Reshae Green, Kory Hill, Kotia Smith, Alexandria Saunders, Jasmine Barnes and Danae Smith all of whom are juniors. Many of them are considered to be St. Augustine’s University student leaders, participating in such activities as band, sports or Greek life.
As the six young ladies showcased some of their talent, business attire and evening wear, the crowed ooohed and ahhhed. It was clear that the candidates had put a lot of time, practice and hard work into the pageant.
The final walk through for the ladies was called and it was time for them to grace the stage in their beautiful and extravagant gowns, and to answer questions before the judges added up the scores and determined who placed as Miss Pre-Alumni, Miss UNCF and Miss St. Augustine University. Many were on the edge of their seats to listen to the order of finish.
Miss Pre- Alumni went to Danae Smith, Miss UNCF to Jasmine Barnes, and the 2016-2017 Miss St. Augustine’s University went to Reshae Green. As the results were announced, the crowd went wild.
Asked how it felt to have been elected as Miss St. Augustine’s University for the 2016-2017 school year, Green said it was “amazing.” She added: “It has been a dream of mine since I stepped on St. Augustine’s University. It trumps winning Miss Sophomore and Miss Junior although they were both momentous moments for me. …“I can’t wait to work alongside students and faculty to make the 2016 and 2017 school year the best year yet.”
