SAU wins home volleyball opener

RALEIGH, NC (Sept 22) – Tonight, Saint Augustine’s University overcame a sluggish start to trounce Johnson C. Smith University 3-1 in its home volleyball opener at Emery Gymnasium.
 
After losing the first set 25-13, the Lady Falcons regrouped to take the next three sets 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18. They improved to 1-0 in the Southern Division, 2-2 in the CIAA and 4-6 overall.
 
“Errors hurt us in the first game,” said Shakera Hall (So./Bridgetown, Barbados), who led the Lady Falcons with 19 kills and 11 digs. “We played much better the rest of the match.”
 
Brittany Jamison (So./Summerville, SC) added 16 kills and Meghan Mahon (Sr./Houston, TX) totaled 36 assists. Zoey Isom (So./Phoenix, AZ) registered 13 digs for the Lady Falcons, who won their first home opener in five years. On Sept. 21, 2011, the Lady Falcons defeated Johnson C. Smith 3-0.
 
CIAA kills leader Olivia Porter (Sr./Bakersfield, CA) suffered an injury before the match. She played through the injury and managed two kills, three service aces and three digs.
 
Her teammates stepped up against the Golden Bulls. Hall tied a career-high while Jamison set a personal best in kills.
 
“It was good to see them raise their level of play,” said SAU Head Coach Serita Wilson.
 
Maya Washington recorded 11 kills for the Golden Bulls, who fell to 0-1 in the Southern Division, 1-3 in the CIAA and 2-5 overall. Azha McNeil contributed 29 assists and Georgina Diaz tallied 10 digs.
 
The Lady Falcons will look to extend their two-match win streak against Winston-Salem State University on Monday, Sept. 26. The match will be played at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
