The second floor of the MLK Building is being transformed into a Student Center.

A new student center will open on the second floor of the MLK building sometime in September, according to Ann Brown, Assistant Dean of Student Leadership and Campus Life. The center will have three televisions and a variety of games

and entertainment such as a pool table and table tennis.

The center will be located in the open area next to the grill.  It will have new furniture, such as comfortable chairs, and a new look with fresh paint and other upgrades, she said.

The center will be called Falcon Avenue, Ms. Brown said.  “The goal is for this upgraded space to feel like a home to all SAU students, a ‘place to be,’ ” she said.

“It will be a fun atmosphere and an overall place to be for students,” agreed Dr. Paul Norman, Dean of Men.

A lot of the equipment already has been acquired through donations, Ms. Brown said. She did not want to commit to a date for the grand opening, but said she was confident the center will be open sometime in September.

Future plans call for the upper level of the MLK building to house two organization offices: the Student Government Association (SGA) and Campus Activity Board (CAB). Stressing the importance of providing an area for commuter students, Dr. Norman said, “Falcon Avenue should serve as a hub for students to socialize even if they are not staying on campus.”

Future plans also call for a courtyard area for activities for smaller groups. “A poetry reading event for students that accommodates a smaller crowd would be something to think about,” Dr. Norman said.

SAU will accept donations from the local community. Furniture, games, monetary donations and other items such as electronics are needed. If you would like to donate to SAU, please contact Ms. Brown. At ABrown@st-aug.edu.
