Falcons succumb to Winston-Salem in volleyball

RALEIGH, NC (Oct 25) – On Tuesday night, Saint Augustine’s University fought hard before eventually succumbing 3-0 to Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA volleyball match at Emery Gymnasium.
The Lady Falcons dropped to 3-4 in the Southern Division and 8-11 overall after the 22-25, 19-25, 9-25 loss. Despite the defeat, they remain fourth in the division with three conference matches left. The top four teams in the Northern and Southern Divisions advance to the CIAA Tournament, which will be held Nov. 18-20 in Ettrick, Va.
Shakera Hall (So./Bridgetown, Barbados) collected 12 kills and Olivia Porter (Sr./Bakersfield, CA) added nine kills and 10 digs for the Lady Falcons. Meghan Mahon (Sr./Houston, TX) totaled 17 assists and Zoey Isom (So./Phoenix, AZ) had 20 digs while Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) finished with 11 digs.
The match was much closer than the score indicated. The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set before eventually losing by three points. After falling behind 13-6 in the second set, the Lady Falcons closed within 20-19 but the Rams scored the final five points.
After giving their all in both sets, the Lady Falcons ran out of gas in the third set, losing by 16 points.
Jasmine Smith paced the Rams with 10 kills and Mya Snow tallied 31 assists. Michelle Murray-Garcia contributed 18 digs for the Rams, who upped their record to 5-2 in the Southern Division and 16-10 overall. They remain third in the division.
The Lady Falcons return to Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Oct. 31 in a home match against Southern Division co-leader Fayetteville State University. The match begins at 6 p.m.
