RALEIGH, NC (Nov 15) – On Saturday, Nov. 12, Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) scored 17 points and snatched 13 rebounds for Saint Augustine’s University in a 71-69 men’s basketball loss to California (Pa.) University on the final day of the Trojan Tip-Off Classic in Ettrick, Va.
The double-double was the 23rd in January’s career, which spans 57 games. Last season, January ranked eighth nationally in Division II with 16 double-doubles.
Kasey Bryant (Jr./Raleigh, NC) added 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) pumped in 15 points for the Falcons, who were coming off a six-point win against Mansfield University in their season opener the previous night. Craig McDaniel (So./Holly Springs, NC) chipped in eight points.
Trailing 64-58 late in the game, the Falcons managed to tie the score at 69-69 on a jumper by Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC). The Vulcans won on two free throws by Ramon Creighton, who scored a game-high 26 points.
Rashawn Browne added 20 points and seven assists and Robel Teckle scored 13 points for the Vulcans, who evened their record at 1-1. Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor but the Vulcans reached the free throw line 30 times and made 21 (70 percent) which was more than the Falcons attempted. The Falcons were 13 of 19 from the free throw line for 68.4 percent and connected on 6 of 22 three-point attempts for 27.3 percent while the Vulcans hit 10 of 28 treys for 35.7 percent.
Led by January, the Falcons dominated the boards 41-30 including a 16-11 edge in offensive rebounds. January led the Falcons with seven offensive boards.
The Falcons are back in action this weekend at the Pickle Classic hosted by the University of Mount Olive. They play Barton College on Friday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. and Mount Olive on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Mount Olive, N.C.
