Athletes and College

In life physical activities are inevitable. We do physical activities everyday through out our day to day lives from walking through out our houses to running to the car when we are late for work. Although we all move and get physical from time to time there are some who are gifted in particular traits which lead them into what we call sports. Most commonly we as humans partake in most of our sports on a high intensity level around the college stage. Some reasons behind this are most college athletes are on scholarship therefore they are giving their best to remain on scholarship while others have a passion and desire for their particular sport. Some may say college athletes are over worked and not paid which is a negative thing but there is a great importance that athletes partake in sports during college here is why.

By participating in sports athletes can Make connections with people whom they would have never meet before, get or stay in shape, discover deep passions about certain crafts, be a better punctual student, and even be hired for a position if they are doing well in their sport. All of these benefits help in areas out side of the sporting arena they strengthen your senses and sharpen your alert and awareness.

The NCAA.Org is quoted saying “Student-athletes have the opportunity to travel across the country and around the world for competition, including regular-season, NCAA championships and foreign tours. Some student-athletes receive national and international exposure during competition. These experiences can open doors for the few who will compete professionally and for the majority who will go pro in something other than sports”. They also said “Increasingly, the business world is focusing on creating a team environment with employees, as evidenced by constant discussion of teamwork in publications like the Harvard Business Review. By competing in college sports, student-athletes learn important skills, like leadership, time management and how to effectively work with others toward a common goal. Companies have specifically said that they seek to hire former student-athletes, and the majority of student-athletes say that participating in college sports prepares them for life after graduation”.

Tia Adana Belle Senior at Saint Augustine University spoke about how sports helped her to get a better life experience outside of her country Barbados. Belle says “at first I didn’t like sports although I am extremely blessed and talented in track and field I hate going to practice but thinking back to where track has taken me I would recommend every student to try out for a team even if they do not make the team still get involved in some type of sport. I have noticed it has helped my alertness and also my energy levels before practice and during class my body adjusted to being alert so classes became easier for me I took what I learned about race strategy and applied it back into my problem solving and found myself doing better in classes I once would have given up on”.

The NCAA.ORG is quoted saying “More than 460,000 NCAA student-athletes – more than ever before – compete in 24 sports every year. Member schools support their student-athletes’ academic success by providing state-of-the-art technology, tutoring and access to academic advisors. More than eight out of 10 student-athletes will earn a bachelor’s degree, and more than 35 percent will earn a postgraduate degree.”
