Volleyball team loses two to open season

RALEIGH, NC (Sept. 16) – Preseason All-CIAA outside hitter Shakera Hall (Jr./Bridgetown, Barbados) picked up where she left off last season.

An All-CIAA pick a year ago, Hall opened the season with 49 kills in two matches at the CIAA Volleyball Roundup I at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday. She tallied 19 kills in a 3-0 defeat to Chowan University and 30 kills in a 3-1 loss to Virginia Union University. Last season, Hall led the CIAA in kills per set.

In the Chowan match, Hall added 13 digs and two blocking assists and Taylor Irving (Fr./Litchfield, AZ) added 24 assists for the Lady Falcons, who fell 20-25, 20-25, 11-25. Zoey Isom (Jr./Phoenix, AZ) recorded 16 digs and Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) had 10 digs.

Kayla Gates and Cheryl Thomas both finished with eight kills for Chowan. Karisa Patterson had 34 assists and seven service aces and Bailey Zavala registered 16 digs.

In the Virginia Union match, Irving amassed 34 assists and Isom contributed 13 digs. Mechele Moss (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) had 12 digs.

Virginia Union, which won 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, was led by Jayshil Oatley with 12 kills and 12 digs. Ambryanna Moore collected 10 kills and six blocking assists.

The Lady Falcons take on Lincoln (Pa.) University on Sunday, Sept. 17 to conclude the Roundup. The match begins at 1 p.m.
