RALEIGH, N.C. (March 17) – Saint Augustine’s University got off to a rousing start on the first day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up.
The Lady Falcons upended Elizabeth City State University 17-1 in six innings and Lincoln (Pa.) University 10-0 in five innings at the South Park Softball Complex in Elizabeth City, N.C., on Friday, March 16. The victories improved their record to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.
Against Elizabeth City State, the Lady Falcons amassed 15 hits in scoring a season-high in runs. Jasmine Rios (Sr./Greensboro, NC) led the way with three RBIs, three runs scored, a home run and a triple on 2-for-3 hitting.
Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) also had a home run and a triple in addition to two RBIs and a game-high four runs scored on 3-for-3 hitting. Haili Pettifer (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) was 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Chandra Mackey (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) batted 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored, and Tamiera Sanchez (So./Sacramento, CA) had a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Haley Sessoms (So./Kenansville, NC) scored two runs for the Lady Falcons, who broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth inning.
Rios set the tone with a two-run homer in the first inning. Parker added a two-run homer in the second inning to push the Lady Falcons ahead 7-0.
MaKayla August (So./Palm Springs, CA) fired a two-hitter in five innings for the pitching win. She totaled 10 strikeouts, two walks and no earned runs to up her record to 4-2.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons were led by McPhaul, who finished with four RBIs, one home run and two runs scored on 2-for-2 hitting. Sessoms was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Mackey knocked in two runs for the Lady Falcons, who totaled 11 hits.
Parker batted 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored, and Rios hit a double and scored two runs. Mechelle Moss (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) was 2-for-3 with a triple and one run scored, and Pettifer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored. August had a triple, one RBI and two runs scored.
The Lady Falcons pulled away from Lincoln (Pa.) with five runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a grand slam homer by McPhaul. Moss threw a three-hit shutout in five innings for her first pitching victory of the season.
On Saturday, the Lady Falcons take on defending CIAA champion Chowan University at 10 a.m. and Bowie State University at 12 p.m. on the second day of the CIAA Round-Up. The site is the South Park Softball Complex.
