Lady Falcons’ volleyball season gets off to a bumpy start

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 2) – In their first taste of competition this season, the Lady Falcons lost four matches in the VSU Tournament in Ettrick, Va., over the weekend.,The Lady Falcons fell by 3-0 scores in matches against Virginia State University, the University of Mount Olive, Richard Bland College and Alderson Broaddus University at the Multipurpose Center on the Virginia State campus. The loss against Richard Bland does not count because it was an exhibition match.

Several student-athletes stood out for the Lady Falcons (0-3 overall) despite the losses. Brittany Jamison (Jr./Charleston, SC) led the team offensively with 1.89 kills per set while Zoey Isom (Sr./Phoenix, AZ) averaged a team-high 4.22 assists per set and 2.78 digs per set. Chandra Mackey (So./Nassau, Bahamas) averaged a team-best 3.25 digs per set and Janina Mayers (Christ Church, Barbados) averaged 2.89 digs per set.

Against Mount Olive on Friday, Aug. 31, Isom finished with 16 assists and nine digs and Mackey tallied 12 digs. Jamison totaled six kills and eight digs in the match.

Isom recorded nine assists and eight digs against Virginia State and 13 assists and eight digs against Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, Sept. 1. Mayers collected 11 digs and Jordan Rozier (So./Raeford, NC) had 10 digs, two service aces and one block against Alderson Broaddus.

The tournament was a tune-up for the CIAA Round Up I, which will be held this weekend at the same site. The Lady Falcons will face Chowan University at 12 p.m. and Virginia State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Elizabeth City State University at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
