RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 9) – Saint Augustine’s University gained its first victory of the volleyball season on the final day of the CIAA Round-Up I.
The Lady Falcons swept Elizabeth City State University 3-0 on Sunday at the VSU Multipurpose Center in Ettrick, Va. Janina Mayers (Fr./Christ Church, Barbados) led the way with team-highs of nine kills and 18 digs as the Lady Falcons regrouped from three-set losses to Chowan University and Virginia State University a day earlier in the Round-Up.
The victory gives the Lady Falcons (1-2 CIAA, 1-5 overall) a much-needed boost of momentum heading into their home opener against Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday, Sept. 13. The Lady Falcons took only six players to the Round-Up this weekend.
Head Coach Serita Wilson said the goal was to put the losses behind them and focus on Elizabeth City State (0-3 CIAA, 0-9 overall).
“I told the young ladies to play one point at a time by serving tough and being smart,” Wilson said. “That’s what they did.”
Brittany Jamison (Jr./Charleston, SC) added eight kills and 14 digs while Zoey Isom (Sr./Phoenix, AZ) contributed 22 assists and 15 digs for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-21, 25-21, 25-19. Mechelle Moss (So./Nassau, Bahamas) and Jordan Rozier (So./Raeford, NC) each tallied 15 digs and Alyssa Smith (So./Orangeburg, SC) totaled four blocking assists.
D’Aysa Wilson led Elizabeth City State with six kills and added 15 digs. Jahera Dangerfield collected 10 assists and Alexis Blackwell finished with 21 digs.
The Lady Falcons host two conference matches in four days this week starting with Johnson C. Smith on Thursday at Emery Gymnasium. First serve is 6 p.m.
