On March 25, 26 junior and senior men and women were inducted to the prestigious Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. The event was hosted in the historic chapel of Saint Augustine’s University. Family and friends of those inducted, as well as faculty members, were in attendance.
The Alpha Kappa Mu is a general honor society open to junior and senior men and women in all academic areas. The society’s purpose is to provide encouragement, cultivate high standards for students in their personal lives, and develop an appreciation for scholarship and scholarly endeavors.
Cortney McCoy, a junior business administration from Clayton, North Carolina, felt honored and inspired to be selected for the induction. “It was inspiring to see all the academic achievers in one place,” McCoy said. “It was nice to see all academic backgrounds together.”
Angie Mejia, a senior psychology major with a minor in public health who was born in Honduras but raised in Durham, NC, felt proud as a new member of Alpha Kappa Mu. “It felt great,” Mejia said. “I’ve worked hard in everything I do and to see my hard work being recognized is a feeling like no other.”
Membership in the organization brings a number of opportunities to students. Some of the benefits of membership include the opportunity to apply for the George W. Gore/Thomas J. Crawford Scholarship and to attend the national convention as well as receiving the Alpha Kappa Mu Newsletter.
