Football team falls in home opener

Jeremiah Miller makes a run in Virginia State University game.

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 21) – Senior tailback Jeremiah Miller (Miami, FL) scored a touchdown for Saint Augustine’s University in a 34-7 football loss to Virginia State University in the home opener at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Saturday.

The contest was a non-conference game between two CIAA schools. The Falcons visit Bowie State University in their CIAA opener in Bowie, Md., on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Miller scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter. A 39-yard pass play on fourth down from Jalen Jones (Sr./Baltimore, MD) to Dontarian Evans (Fr./Gainesville, FL) at the Virginia State one-yard line set up Miller’s score.

Andre Labat (Fr./Miami, FL) kicked the extra point to pull the Falcons within 17-7. The Trojans (2-1 overall) scored 17 straight points after Miller’s touchdown for the final score.

Jones totaled 149 all-purpose yards after entering the game at quarterback in the second quarter. Linebacker Joe Harris (So./Jacksonville, FL) led the Falcons (0-3 overall) defensively with 12 tackles. Demetrius Strickland led the Virginia State offense with 114 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

Both teams were scheduled to meet last season in Raleigh, N.C., but the game was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.
