RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 28) – D’Ontre Gilliard (Fr./Holly Hill, SC) connected with E’Kwon White (So./Franklinton, NC) on a 50-yard touchdown pass for Saint Augustine’s University in a 54-6 loss to nationally-ranked Bowie State University in the CIAA football opener for both teams at Bulldogs Stadium in Bowie, Md., on Saturday.
The pass ricocheted off another player and fell into the hands of White, who outraced a Bowie State defender in the end zone for the score.
The Falcons scored with 48 seconds left to prevent the shutout. The touchdown was the first in the college career of White, who started the season at defensive end.
Gilliard came off the bench to complete 11 of 22 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Falcons. Linebacker Durrell Nash (Jr./Memphis, TN) led the Falcons with 11 tackles and linebacker Joseph Harris, Jr. (So./Jacksonville, FL) added eight tackles including three tackles for loss and one sack in addition to one forced fumble. Defensive lineman Brandon Jackson (So./Washington, NC) tallied eight tackles including two tackles for loss and one sack.
Ja’rome Johnson completed 19 of 29 passes for 307 yards, four touchdowns and one interception for the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs (1-0 CIAA, 4-0 overall). He added two more scores on the ground for six touchdowns overall.
The Falcons (0-1 CIAA, 0-4 overall) return home next Saturday, Oct. 5, for a CIAA matchup against Elizabeth City State University at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Game time is 1 p.m.
