SAU Women’s Basketball nearly pulls off comeback in two-point loss to Mount Olive

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 13) – Saint Augustine’s University battled back from a 15-point second-half deficit but fell 70-68 to the University of Mount Olive in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C., on Wednesday.
The loss was the first in three games for the Lady Falcons (2-1 overall), who trailed 62-47 entering the fourth period. But the Lady Falcons put together a 21-8 run in the fourth period to scare the Trojans (2-0 overall).
Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) converted a three-point play and Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) connected on 1 of 2 free throws to pull the Lady Falcons with 69-68 with 13 seconds left. The Trojans made 1 of 2 from the charity stripe with five seconds left to hold off the Lady Falcons.
Quiera Gilmore (Jr./Charlotte, NC) sparked the Lady Falcons with career highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds in addition to three steals. Williams added 14 points and eight rebounds and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) chipped in 10 points. Both Clark and Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) totaled seven points with Clark grabbing nine rebounds.
Azariah Fields finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and Hope Toliver added 13 points for the Trojans. Sherry Johnson had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Falcons outscored the Trojans in the paint 34-18 and won the rebounding battle 44-39. They hit 9 of 14 free throws compared to 30 of 46 for Mount Olive.
The SAU women return to the court in 10 days to host UNC Pembroke in their home opener on Nov. 23. Game time is 2 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
