The school year for students at Saint Augustine’s University is winding down. As some students prepare to pack up for the summer, others will be packing up for good. The 84th commencement ceremony for graduates will take place on May 16, 2015, on the Quadrangle.
Many are eagerly anticipating the day.
“I am so happy that I am graduating next month,” said senior Arielle McMillan. “I have been waiting on this moment for so long.”
But there are some changes in the ceremony this year. The event is usually held on a Sunday in early May; this year it’s on Saturday in mid-May. That has some scratching their heads.
“I just don’t understand why graduation is on a Saturday and it’s late this year,” said senior Shavona Hill.
University Registrar Carla Washington explained the reason for the changes: “ The graduation will be held on a Saturday because it’s more convenient for the graduates family and friends that will be attending,” she stated. As for the date, Ms. Washington explained: “This year we started the semester late. Last year, the semester started on the 8th of January; this year, the semester started on the 14th of January.”
The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. Students should report to the Seby Jones building by 7:30 a.m. The commencement speaker will be Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott of Virginia.
“I’m excited to hear him speak,” said senior Da’Lon Scott, who is no relation to the Congressman. “I know he will be very motivational.”
No matter what the details are, the spirit of the graduating seniors will be the same. “ I don’t care that commencement is late this year,” senior Jaleesa Roberts said. “I’m just happy I’m graduating. I can’t wait for May 16”.
