Long jumper Shakinah Brooks (Jr./Raleigh, NC) of Saint Augustine’s University was named NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year and sprinter Daniel Jamieson (Sr./Windsor, CT) of Saint Augustine’s University was selected Atlantic Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor track and field season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. The regional individual indoor awards are the first for Brooks and Jamieson.
Brooks is coming off an outstanding indoor regular season. She is ranked No. 2 in the women’s long jump entering the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, which will be held Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12. Her jump of 20-5¼ at the Camel City Invitational is not only second-best in Division II this season but eighth-best all-time in Division II.
The talented All-American won three of four long jump events this season including the Camel City Invitational where she shattered her old facility record by nearly two inches. She also claimed her second consecutive CIAA long jump title and won the 200-meter dash at the Buccaneer Invitational.
Jamieson was stellar during the regular season. He won all four 200-meter races he competed in including the CIAA Championships. The indoor conference title in the 200 was the second straight for Jamieson.
The All-American sprinter is seeded third in the 200 and fourth in the 60-meter dash heading into the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. His fastest times this season are 21.12 seconds in the 200 and 6.73 seconds in the 60.
