In preparation for their season, Saint Augustine’s University men’s golf team participated in three tournaments recently, placing third in two and seventh on the third. The third tournament was the VSU Trojan Fall Classic hosted by the Men’s golf team from Virginia State University.
“I am looking forward to playing in the VSU Trojan Fall Classic and I’m hoping we can place higher than we did playing in our two previous tournament games,” said Stephon Gumbs, a senior golfer from Hartford, CT majoring in Exercise Science. But the Falcons could manage no better than 7th in that tournament, which was held Oct. 23-25.
Earlier this month SAU men’s golf team competed in the CIE Roundup on Oct. 8, and the Virginia Union University Fall Invitational on Oct. 9, 2016. That tournament was on The Crossing Golf Course in Glen Allen, Virginia.
The team is hoping to improve on last year, which ended on April 5 when they played against Elizabeth City State University and placed fourth in the ECSU invitational at the Pines at Elizabeth City golf courses.
Team members are unsure of the team’s prospects but hope to do well. “All we ask for is support from our Falcon family,” Gumbs said.
The team was restarted a couple of years ago after being out of action for a few years. It appears to be catching on with some students.
“I don’t know much about the golf team and there season but I would like to know more information about their season and statics,” said JaQuan Phillips, a junior majoring in business administration. “I think by our school having a golf team show’s diversity in athleticism.”
