RALEIGH, NC (Nov 26) – On Saturday, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) erupted for a season-high 29 points and Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 19 points as Saint Augustine’s University finished strong in a 65-56 men’s college basketball win over Auburn University at Montgomery in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Antonio Watson (So./Raleigh, NC) added seven points and four steals for the Falcons (3-4 overall), who claimed third place in the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout at the ICI Center. Auburn Montgomery remained winless in six games.
Gaskins scored 20 points and January added 11 points in the second half to help the Falcons erase a 25-21 halftime deficit. The Falcons outscored Auburn Montgomery 44-31 in the final stanza including 25-12 in the last 8:43 after trailing 44-40. Gaskins scored 16 points during the run including seven consecutive points at one stretch.
The junior guard started the surge with a three-pointer to get the Falcons within 44-43. His layup with 49 seconds left gave the Falcons a comfortable 65-53 lead.
Sparked by Gaskins and January, the Falcons shot 54.5 percent in the second half to race past Auburn Montgomery, which shot 40 percent in the final 20 minutes. Gaskins was 9 of 14 and January was 5 of 9 from the floor in the second half.
For the contest, the Falcons shot 41.5 percent and Auburn Montgomery made 39 percent of its shots. January added nine rebounds and Gaskins pulled down seven rebounds for the Falcons, who scored 27 points off 21 Auburn Montgomery turnovers.
Darrion Taylor scored 16 points and Lafayette James-Core added 12 points for Auburn Montgomery, which opened a 19-7 lead in the first half. But January scored all eight of his first-half points in the final 3:39 to cut the margin to 25-21 at halftime. The Falcons then took over the second half to earn their third victory of the season.
The Falcons are back on the court Thursday, Dec. 1 against Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W. Va., with the contest beginning at 7:30 p.m. This will be the eighth straight road game for the Falcons since the season started.
