SAU takes on a new club: I Am Undefined

I Am Undefined is the name of a new organization on campus that has the mission of “Women Helping Women.”

The group got its official start on Friday, Oct. 20, when several young women attended an interest meeting in the basement of the Boyer building.

I Am Undefined has three student leaders, who also served as hosts for the meeting: Zariah Settles, Jazmin Powell and Jonise Holmes.

Settles, is a junior media & communications major, with a concentration in broadcasting. Powell is a senior media & communications major, with a concentration in strategic communications. Holmes is a sophomore education major and a member of SAU’s Poetry Club.

Holmes, one of the group’s leaders, said, “My hope for I Am Undefined is to create a safe haven for women to empower each other, embrace their natural beauty and serve the community.”

Settles and Powell are also two of three Sheen Magazine and Chapman Foundation student ambassadors on campus.

At the interest meeting, the organizers set a festive atmosphere, decorating the room with balloons, confetti and other party decorations. The meeting covered the club’s purpose, goals, and policies as well as what it offers and its inspiration, and the meeting also included games, girl talk, and door prizes. Young ladies in attendance also received goodie bags, donuts, and magazines. I Am Undefined magazine gifts were sponsored by Sheen Magazine.

I Am Undefined’s leading advisor for the club, Ms. Courtney Brown, the technology manager for SAU’s Prezell R. Robinson Library, was also in attendance at the meeting. Brown said she was “thrilled and honored” that she had been asked to be the advisor.

“I feel as though a club like this is well overdue,” she said. “There is so much and in so many ways in which this club can be useful to women on campus. This club offers things that ladies on campus can’t get anywhere else. There is a void in this generation that needs to be filled and the organization fills it with its impact. The interest meeting went very well and the turnout was great, especially by it being on a Friday before Homecoming. I am really looking forward to the growth of the club. I know the club will thrive.”

Among those attending the meeting was Ja’Shay Spurlock, a senior sociology major. “I signed up to be a member and I really enjoyed the interest meeting,” Spurlock said. “It was different and I like how we talked about not defining ourselves and putting labels on ourselves. I also like the idea of expressing that we are beautiful inside and out.”

The club will become an official registered student organization (RSO) in the 2018 spring semester. Ms. Erin Davis, Assistant Director of Student Activities and executive officer of the Young Alumni Council has approved I Am Undefined as a new campus club.

Now that student leaders have conducted their interest meeting they are working towards completing all RSO Census information. Leaders are also working on preparations for their next meeting and calendar of events.
