RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 11) – Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) collected 21 points and 14 rebounds for Saint Augustine’s University in an 86-63 men’s basketball season-opening loss to nationally-ranked Fairmont State University in the Joe Retton Classic in Fairmont, W.Va., on Friday, Nov. 10.
The Falcons’ forward posted his seventh straight double-double dating back to last season. He has 39 career double-doubles, which ranks among the active Division II national leaders in the category.
January was 9 of 14 from the floor and 3 of 5 from the free throw line. His three assists tied for team-high honors and he recorded a team-best two blocks.
Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) added 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting including 2 of 3 three-point attempts. Both Kenneth Collins (Sr./Holly Springs, NC) and Quinton Morrow (Jr./Burlington, NC) chipped in 10 points.
January scored 17 points in the second half on 7 of 9 shooting including 3 of 3 from the charity stripe, but the Falcons were outscored 56-30 which erased their 33-30 halftime lead. Fairmont State, last season’s NCAA Division II national runner-up, outshot the Falcons 57.1 percent to 38.2 percent and outrebounded the visitors 25-16 in the second half. The hosts also made 11 of 19 free throws and 5 of 12 three-pointers compared to 3 of 3 free throws and 1 of 4 three-pointers for the Falcons in the final 20 minutes.
Andrew Emrick scored 13 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Fairmont State (1-0 overall), ranked 18th in the Basketball Times Preseason Top 20 poll and 20th in the D2SIDA National Media Poll. Vonte Montgomery added 12 points.
The Falcons jumped out to a 7-0 lead which grew to 17-4 in the first half. The margin was 23-11 before Fairmont State scored 15 straight points to move ahead 26-23. The Falcons ended the half on a 10-4 run for a three-point lead.
Collins and Morrow had eight points apiece in the first half for the Falcons, who outshot (43.8 to 34.3) and outrebounded (24-21) Fairmont State in the opening stanza. Jason Jolly had six points for Fairmont State.
The Falcons will look to bounce back against Notre Dame College (Ohio) on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Joe Retton Classic. Game time is 3 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
