For those who complain that there is not enough going on around campus, student leaders and administrators say they hear you and are doing something about it. Anne Brown, director of student activities, and Isis Thomas, Student Government Association president, say they have been working hard and have an exciting line-up of activities planned for the spring.
Campus organizations, particularly Divine 9 organizations, have stepped up to meet the challenge for more activities, Brown said.
“I am glad that the registered student organizations have taken a active interest in planning events and activities that the students at Saint Augustine University will attend,” she said. “SAU is fortunate to have the Divine 9 on campus. Our sororities and fraternities have committed to being more active in leadership and scholarship.”
Planned activities are not only for fun but also to promote health and help the community. For example, Alpha Phi Alpha is presenting the first Black and Gold Pageant in several years on March 9. The event, which will include a beauty competition, will be held at Seby Jones Auditorium. The Alphas also, along with Phi Beta Sigma, are sponsoring as Sleep Out for the Homeless on March 5 at Latham Hall, and Falcons4Health is sponsoring HIV/STD Testing at the Gordon health Center on Feb. 20.
Kendrick Cunningham, an Alpha member, said the fraternity is stepping up this semester through the leadership of Pan Hellenic Council President Deqwain Hart.
“Deqwain made sure we were engaged this semester with events and initiatives.,” Cunningham said.
Some events already have taken place, such as The Student Government Association has activities going on for the institution including the Town Hall that took place January 31st on a Wednesday where students talk about issues going around campus. Greek organizations on campus are collaborating on some other activities as well, such as a Greek Community Service event during Greek Week, April 23 to 28.
The Sigmas will also hold “Walk like a Sigma,” an event in which women act like Sigmas, on March 28 in Seby Jones.
The sororities are also planning some major events. Delta Sigma Theta, for example, is sponsoring “The Skin I’m In/TLC Experience” in the library on March 7 in collaboration with Alpha Phi Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s activities include “What not to Wear” on Feb. 15 and “Love Yourself” on Feb. 9, both in the Prezell Robinson Library.
One of the spring semester’s major events will be Spring Fling on April 7.
“I’m looking forward to that,” Ms. Brown said. “There will be games, food and entertainment, and we have invited HBCU Pride Nation to join us on our campus.”
Other groups besides the Greek organizations are also involved. The Student Government Association sponsored a Town Hall, where students talk about issues going around campus, on Jan. 31. The Campus Activities Board, sponsored a Super Bowl party on Feb. 4.
A lot of other activities have yet to be finalized, according to Thomas. “I’m aware of organizations preparing events for their calendar and I hope they will be great,” she said.
