RALEIGH, N.C. (March 25) – Sparked by individual leader Sam Cudjoe (So./Bethel, Trinidad & Tobago), Saint Augustine University sits in second place after the first day of the CIAA Southern Division Golf Championship on Monday. The two-day tournament is held at the Charles T. Myers Golf Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Cudjoe fired a two-under par 70 to lead all golfers on the par 72, 6,783-yard course. He is the only golfer who shot under par Monday.
Last year’s CIAA Golfer of the Year and Rookie Golfer of the Year, Cudjoe helped the Falcons shoot a 302 to finish three strokes behind first-day leader Virginia Union University, which shot a 299. Livingstone College is third with a 307 and Fayetteville State University is fourth with a 315. Chowan University is fifth with a 331 followed by Johnson C. Smith University (345), Virginia State University (346) and Elizabeth City State University (393).
All five SAU golfers, including Cudjoe, placed within the top 17 individually after the first day. Curt Morris (So./Cartersville, GA) is tied for ninth with a 76 and Tanner Duncan (Jr./Clayton, NC) is tied for 11th with a 77. Jaylon Lynn (So./Garner, NC) is 16th with a 79 and James Thomas Moore (Jr./Augusta, GA) is tied for 17th with an 80.
Cudjoe leads Alkin Barkley of Virginia Union, who is second with a 72. Sean Burks of Fayetteville State is third with a 73 and Logan Sessoms of Fayetteville State and Travon Willis of Virginia Union are tied for fourth with a 74.
The tournament concludes Tuesday at Myers Golf Club.
