LAUREL, Md. – Led by Nicole Sciortino (So./Raleigh, N.C.) and Ja’Nia Jones (Jr./Fayetteville, N.C.), Saint Augustine’s University roared to a second-place finish against Southern Division teams at the CIAA Northern/Southern Divisional No. 1 Meet earlier this month. The event was the season opener for the Lady Falcons.
The Lady Falcons knocked down 10,140 total pins and posted a 12-3 record at the three-day event. Only Winston-Salem State, which claimed first place, had a better weekend than the Lady Falcons among Southern Division schools. The Lady Rams barely topped the Lady Falcons with 10,254 total pins and a 13-2 record.
Sciortino and Jones of the Lady Falcons were impressive at the meet. Sciortino, the 2011-12 CIAA most valuable bowler and rookie of the year, rolled a 189.5 average in 10 team matches including four 200-plus games while Jones bowled a 172.4 average. Sciortino was second and Jones sixth in the individual average rankings among Northern and Southern Division bowlers at the meet.
After posting a 3-2 record on Friday, Nov. 9, the Lady Falcons caught fire the final two days. They were a perfect 5-0 on Saturday and 4-1 in Baker matches on Sunday.
Defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State was third with 10,568 total pins and an 11-4 record. Shaw placed fourth with 8,408 pins and a 5-10 mark while Johnson C. Smith was fifth with 8,169 total pins and a 3-12 record. Livingstone was sixth with 7,777 pins and a 1-14 record.
The Lady Falcons will compete again later this month. They will be at the Virginia Union Invitational, which will be held Nov. 30 thru Dec. 1 in Richmond, Va.
